"Marion Warren's exquisite black and white studies of Annapolis, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay culture opened my eyes to the possibilities of monochrome photography. Sojourns on my red bicycle to the Ginter Park Public Library in Richmond, Virginia yielded books by Ansel Adams [no relation], who I would rediscover ten years later.
That was 1982. The previous winter my sister Betsey had given birth, so our mother bought a Canon T-50 SLR body, 50 and 135mm lenses and flash for baby pictures. The trouble was, sis lived in Anaheim, California, while we remained in Richmond. So, during a visit back home, I appropriated my mother's equipment and began taking it into the streets and nightlife surrounding Virginia Commonwealth University, to teach myself photography." |
